Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Credits

Harvest’s organic waste management practices reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a number of ways, some of which are quantifiable and certifiable. While mandatory carbon markets have yet to develop in North America, voluntary markets do exist. Harvest can generate credits for trading in these markets through two mechanisms: landfill diversion of food waste (or other waste that would have been landfilled) and renewable energy offsets through the generation of electricity through non-fossil fuel based feedstocks. Various carbon credit markets have developed protocols to quantify and certify these greenhouse gas offsets.

In addition to the quantifiable and certifiable emission reductions, Harvest’s organics management will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in other ways:

* Reduced trucking of waste by siting facilities closer to the communities that generate the waste
* Sequestration of carbon in the soil
* Reduced use of synthetic, fossil-fuel derived chemical fertilizers
